Technology Development & Research Leadership
Founded by Tim McGee – a biomolecular scientist who is passionate about how we design and manufacture our world – LikoLab focuses on biomanufactured proteins, polymers, fibers, textiles, and composites. Working with materials startups, governments, and Fortune 500 companies, LikoLab provides expertise and advisory services to tackle the research and development of new products, materials, and manufacturing processes.
We know that nature creates incredible materials, from spider silk that’s stronger and tougher than steel to squid proteins that alter the reflection of light. With over a decade of consulting experience, LikoLab can help you bridge science and design to expand your bottom line, reduce tons of CO₂ emissions, and creatively challenge conventional thinking to solve complex problems.
Since 2014, LikoLab has led multiple wide-ranging projects, including automotive innovation, materials analysis, intellectual property development, coordinated research programs, and bespoke bio-inspired and biomaterials research investigations. LikoLab works with a wide range of partners and is always eager to speak with people interested in learning more about how we can help— Let’s connect.
The client developed a biomaterial that offers performance benefits and substantially different physical properties compared to existing alternatives in the market. The client asked LikoLab to help explore and develop new markets and products. LikoLab identified a series of novel bio-manufacturing strategies and companies where the biomaterial could add immediate value and increase product opportunities. LikoLab acted as a primary representative to the bio-manufacturing industry, building relationships and networks to gain entry into the marketplace. LikoLab identified novel use cases for the material and, with senior leadership, developed an internal research plan to validate the opportunities for further investment.

The client was looking to develop products that could take advantage of recent understanding of the human microbiome, biophilic design, and bio-manufacturing. LikoLab worked with an internal research team to explore novel materials, strategies, and manufacturing methods within bio-manufacturing, identifying and building out potential products, technological roadmaps, and building proof of concept demo’s for senior leadership. In addition, LikoLab created and led a coordinated research program involving multiple university laboratories to build IP (intellectual property) and demonstrate novel technological capabilities to executive leadership.
